Overuse of Antibiotics

Overuse of antibiotics

The thoughtless use of antibiotics and the growth of resistibility in them constitute subject of studies of the World Health Organization (WHO).

There are different types of microbes around us which are transmitted with various ways in the human organism and each one of the microbes is responsible for one or more diseases (infections).

The antibiotic medicines which act with various mechanisms in the organism have as mission the extirpation of microbes that have been located in the organism.

Their localization is an entire science process and can only be done by experts.

In a microbial infection, the doctor takes into consideration:

• the clinical picture of patient, the symptomatology.
• the probable responsible pathogenic (microbes).
• where essential, the laboratorial microbial analysis.
• the suitable antibiotic treatment that works out the extirpation of pathogenic. Choosing the most suitable antibiotic for each infection depends on a lot of parameters and is the subject of researches and studies from world institutions.

Moreover, there is another element in which the WHO alerts. The increase of resistibility of microbes against the antibiotics. The microbes have the ability “to change intelligently” with various mechanisms in order to be protected from antibiotics.

As a result, certain antibiotics which could yesterday be the suitable choice, today their action has weaken in certain microbes and consequently the antibiotic treatment would present relapses.

It is a fact that the increase of resistibility is owed in the bad use of antibiotics. What is the explanation however of this thoughtless use?

1. The use of antibiotic without cause. In a symptomatology of homogenous infection (e.g. a simple cold), the antibiotic treatment is only granted when complications are presented.
2. The wrong choice of antibiotic treatment.
3. The wrong dose of the antibiotic.
4. The wrong amount of treatment period. A lot of patients interrupt the treatment because of relief from the symptoms, without the required period for the extirpation of microbes has passed.
5. The unnecessary extension of time of treatment.

In conclusion, the abuse of antibiotics has led to the growth and increase of resistibility to the antibiotics. These precious ‘weapons’ which is up to us if they will be used correctly.
